We are proud to share that the redevelopment of the Leopoldskazerne in Ghent was awarded the very first Public Recognition Prize at the RES Awards yesterday. Presented by the Real Estate Society, this prestigious award reflects the wider public’s appreciation for real estate projects that deliver strong social impact and architectural value.
A project with vision: from barracks to a vibrant urban neighbourhood
Once a closed military site in Ghent, the Leopoldkazerne has become a lively new urban district in the heart of the Kunstenkwartier. With respect for the site’s rich heritage and distinctive architecture, we created—together—a place where living, working, learning and connecting come together.
The project brings public functions, housing, hospitality and offices together around a green, publicly accessible inner space at the Paradeplein. By opening up the original barracks around a central square, we not only created new urban quality, but also preserved the historic character and made it accessible again for residents and visitors.
Strong collaboration as the foundation
The redevelopment of the Leopoldskazerne is the result of a collaboration between multiple partners, including Provincie Oost-Vlaanderen, Ciril, Matexi, Democo, B2Ai, 360 architecten, Sergison Bates Architects, Delva Landscape Architecture, Buro Landschap, Bureau Spectra, Group Nelson (JAM Hotels), Deholi, AEW Security and The Energy Circle.
Building added value together
This public award is a special recognition of the commitment and dedication with which all partners have worked on this project for many years.
We thank everyone who voted for the Leopold Barracks. This recognition is the best confirmation that this place truly lives in the city today.
